Tinnitus Assessment & Management in Narangba
When you suffer with tinnitus, it’s very difficult to ignore. Sometimes, the ringing, buzzing, humming or hissing that no one else can hear is only ocassional and manageable. However, in some cases, it can also be persistent enough to affect sleep, concentration and everyday life.
At Narangba Station Health Centre, we provide tinnitus assessment and management in partnership with Audiwell Hearing. Tinnitus is not a condition in itself and can be associated with factors such as hearing loss, noise exposure, excess earwax and changes within the hearing system.
If you have been suffering with consistent noise that nobody else can hear, book a hearing assessment by calling us on (07) 3521 5523 or booking online. Your audiologist will take the time to understand what you are experiencing, assess your hearing and develop a management plan tailored to your symptoms and needs.
Personalised Tinnitus Support
Hearing and tinnitus assessments with our on-site audiologist, Vidya Rajeev, are available every Tuesday between 1pm and 5pm
There is no single approach to tinnitus that works for everyone. That’s why your assessment considers your hearing as well as how tinnitus is affecting areas such as sleep, concentration, communication and everyday wellbeing.
Ways we can help manage tinnitus
There is no single approach to tinnitus management. The most useful strategies depend on your hearing, symptoms and how tinnitus is affecting your everyday life. Following your assessment, your audiologist may recommend one or more approaches to help reduce the impact of tinnitus and make it easier to manage. The most common approaches we take include:
Sound Therapy
Gentle background sound can reduce the contrast between tinnitus and quiet environments, helping make the tinnitus less prominent or distracting.
Hearing Aids
When tinnitus occurs alongside hearing loss, appropriately fitted hearing aids or bone conduction hearing implants may improve access to everyday sounds and reduce how noticeable tinnitus feels.
Management Strategies
Your audiologist can provide guidance around sleep, sound environments, listening habits and other everyday strategies that may help reduce the impact of tinnitus.
Referrals
If your symptoms require further investigation or support, your audiologist can recommend referral to your GP, psychologist, ENT specialist or other health professionals.
When should you consider a tinnitus assessment?
Tinnitus can sound different from person to person and may be temporary, intermittent or persistent. An assessment can be particularly helpful when tinnitus is new, ongoing or beginning to interfere with everyday life. You should consider a tinnitus assessment if you are experiencing any of the following:
01
You hear ringing, buzzing or humming
Tinnitus is not limited to ringing. It can also sound like buzzing, hissing, humming, clicking, whistling or other sounds without an external source.
02
Sounds keep returning
Sounds that regularly come and go, or remain present for long periods, may be worth discussing with an audiologist.
03
Your sleep is affected
Tinnitus can become particularly noticeable in quiet environments and may make it harder to relax or fall asleep.
04
You are struggling to concentrate
Persistent tinnitus can become distracting and make it more difficult to focus on work, reading or other everyday activities.
05
You have noticed changes in your hearing
Tinnitus commonly occurs alongside hearing loss, so a comprehensive hearing assessment can provide useful information about your overall hearing health.
06
You are more sensitive to sound
Some people experiencing tinnitus also notice increased sensitivity to everyday sounds.
Tinnitus Assessment Fees
A comprehensive hearing assessment forms an important part of evaluating tinnitus and is charged in addition to the tinnitus assessment fee.
Tinnitus Assessment: $100.00 + Hearing Test Fee
Medicare Rebates
A Medicare rebate may be available for eligible diagnostic audiology services where referral requirements are met.
Please call reception on (07) 3521 5523 if you would like to discuss fees or referral requirements before booking.
What To Expect
Your appointment begins with a detailed conversation about your tinnitus, including the type of sound you hear, when you notice it, how long you have experienced it and how it affects your daily life.
Your audiologist will then complete a diagnostic hearing assessment to identify any hearing changes or other factors that may be relevant to your tinnitus.
Your results will be explained clearly, along with any recommended next steps. Depending on your needs, this may include sound therapy, hearing aids where hearing loss is present, practical management strategies or further medical assessment.
The aim is to find an approach that helps make tinnitus less intrusive and easier to manage in everyday life.

Can Tinnitus Be Treated?
There is no single treatment or universal cure for tinnitus as tinnitus is the result of an underlying condition. However, there are ways to make it less noticeable and disruptive whilst the underlying condition is identified.
Tinnitus treatment depends on what may be contributing to your symptoms and could include sound therapy, hearing aids, lifestyle strategies or referral to another health professional where appropriate. Your audiologist will assess your hearing, discuss how tinnitus is affecting your daily life and recommend a few various management approaches tailored to your needs.
Tinnitus FAQs
Do I need a GP referral?
No you do not need a GP referral to book a tinnitus assessment with our audiologist. Both new and existing patients can generally book directly online or by calling our reception team. However, a GP referral may be required for certain Medicare rebates or if further medical investigation is recommended.
What causes tinnitus?
Tinnitus can be associated with hearing loss, exposure to loud noise, earwax, ear infections, inner-ear conditions, some medications and other medical factors. Sometimes there is no obvious underlying cause which is why exploring various management solutions may be required to help clear the problem.
How is tinnitus assessed?
Your audiologist will discuss your symptoms in detail and complete a diagnostic hearing assessment to investigate your hearing and identify possible contributing factors. Both your results and recommended next steps will then be explained which may include management strategies, ear wax removal, hearing aids or referrals to other providers.
Can tinnitus be cured?
There is no universal cure for tinnitus. However, management strategies can help reduce how intrusive it feels and how much it affects everyday life. However, sometimes, tinnitus can be stopped when it is being caused by a treatable underlying condition.
Can hearing aids help tinnitus?
Hearing aids can help some people when tinnitus occurs alongside hearing loss by improving access to surrounding sounds which reduces how noticeable the tinnitus is while also making communication easier.
What is sound therapy for tinnitus?
Sound therapy uses external sounds to reduce the contrast between tinnitus and silence. This may make tinnitus feel less prominent, particularly in quiet environments. In addition, cognitive behavioural therapy may be recommend to realign how the brain interacts with the sounds.
Is tinnitus linked to hearing loss?
Tinnitus commonly occurs alongside hearing loss, although people with normal hearing can also experience buzzing, ringing or white noise. With a diagnostic hearing assessment, we can determine whether hearing loss is present.
When should tinnitus be medically investigated?
If you are experiencing new or changing tinnitus, this should be discussed with a health professional, particularly when it occurs alongside hearing loss, dizziness or other ear symptoms. Sudden hearing loss requires urgent medical assessment.
