IUD Removal in Narangba

Whether your IUD is approaching its replacement date, you’re planning a pregnancy or you simply wish to stop using it, removal is generally a quick and straightforward procedure.

At Narangba Station Health Centre, IUD removal is provided by Dr Emira Sharizan, a female GP with a special interest in women’s health. The procedure is performed in the privacy of a consulting room, where your doctor will explain what to expect, answer any questions and help you feel comfortable throughout the process.

We welcome both new and existing patients from Narangba and across the Moreton Bay region, with no referral required. If you’re ready to have your IUD removed or would like to discuss your contraceptive options, you can book an appointment online or call our friendly reception team on (07) 3521 5523.

IUD Insertion (Coming Soon)

Currently, we are able to provide IUD removal services with IUD insertion available soon.

How IUD Removal Works

IUD removal is a relatively straightforward appointment. Dr Emira will start with a quick consultation to explain the procedure, and the IUD is removed with your informed consent. Your doctor can also discuss or advise on alternative contraception plans before removal.

1. Consultation

Your doctor will review your medical history, IUD type and insertion date, along with your reasons for removal and any future contraception or pregnancy plans.

2. Planning

Discuss any pain, bleeding or unusual discharge with your doctor. They can also advise on contraception options and pain relief before removal.

3. Consent

Your doctor will explain the procedure, answer your questions and ask for your consent before proceeding. You can request to stop at any time.

4. Removal

Your doctor will gently insert a speculum and grasp the IUD threads  to carefully remove the device. The procedure usually takes just a few minutes.

Common reasons to have an IUD removed:

01

Your IUD has reached its expiry date.

Each IUD is approved for a set number of years. The length depends on the type and brand and your doctor can help you work out when yours is due for removal.

02

You want to become pregnant.

An IUD can be removed at any time if you decide to try for a baby. During your  appointment, your doctor can also talk with you about preparing for pregnancy.

03

You have side effects or concerns.

Occasionally, patients have heavy bleeding, pain or other symptoms they find hard to live with. Others have concerns about the position of the IUD.

04

You are changing contraception or approaching menopause.

Sometimes, patients may choose a different contraception method, or you may no longer need contraception. Your doctor can talk through the timing of removal with you in confidence.

Fees & Medicare

The fee for IUD removal depends on the type and length of your appointment. It can also vary with the time of day you attend. A Medicare rebate may apply if you are eligible.

Narangba Station Health Centre is a mixed-billing practice. Our reception team can confirm the current fee when you book.

After Your Removal

Once the IUD is out, your doctor will check that you feel well before you leave. Please inform our team if you feel unwell at any stage during the appointment.

Your doctor will talk with you about what to expect and about the contraception plan you have chosen. Light bleeding or spotting for a few days can happen. However, if you have heavy bleeding, fever, severe pain or unusual discharge in the days or weeks after removal, contact the please clinic. For all emergencies, call 000.

Side Effects & Safety

IUD removal is a common procedure, however, like any procedure, it can cause side effects in some patients. The most common side effects include:

  • Cramping or period-like pain during removal.
  • Light bleeding or spotting.
  • Feeling dizzy or faint.

In rarer cases, infection or injury to the uterus may occur. The IUD may also sit in an unusual position which makes removal harder. In this case, your doctor may suggest an ultrasound or a referral to a specialist.
