Full Diagnostic Hearing Tests
If you’ve noticed a change in your hearing, are finding conversations harder to follow, or have concerns about your child’s hearing, a comprehensive hearing test can provide a clearer picture of what is happening.
At Narangba Station Health Centre, we provide diagnostic hearing assessments for adults and children in partnership with Audiwell Hearing. Unlike our short free 15 minute hearing screens, a comprehensive hearing test assesses your hearing in greater detail. This aids our audiologists to help determine whether hearing loss is present, its type and degree, and whether further assessment or treatment may be appropriate.
No matter your age, obtaining a baseline understanding of your hearing health is an important step to take which can achieved by booking a comprehensive hearing test. To make an appointment, please call us on (07) 3521 5523 or click the link below to book online with our audiologist.
Free 15 Minute Hearing Screen
Our free hearing screening (for adults only) is a quick, non-invasive way to check whether your hearing is within the expected range. If any concerns are identified, our audiologist may recommend a comprehensive hearing assessment.

What happens during a comprehensive hearing test?
A comprehensive hearing assessment uses a range of diagnostic tests to build a detailed picture of your hearing and how different parts of your hearing system are functioning. The exact tests used will depend on your age, symptoms and individual needs. Your audiologist will guide you through each assessment, explain what you need to do and discuss the results with you once testing is complete.
The types of testing we perform include:
Tone Audiometry
Measures the quietest sounds you can hear across different frequencies which helps determine what degree of hearing loss is present, if any.
Bone Conduction
Helps your audiologist understand how sound is reaching the inner ear and can assist in identifying the type of hearing loss that is present.
Speech Recognition
Assesses how clearly you can understand speech, providing additional information about how your hearing may affect communication.
Tympanometry
Checks eardrum and middle ear functions to help identify issues such as changes in middle-ear pressure or fluid behind the eardrum.
When should you consider a hearing test?
Hearing changes are not always obvious, particularly when developed gradually. A full hearing assessment may be worthwhile if you or your child are experiencing changes in hearing, communication or listening. Some of the most common signs that a hearing test is suitable include:
01
You’re finding conversations harder to follow
Speech may seem less clear, particularly when several people are talking or when you’re in a busy or noisy environment.
02
You often ask people to repeat themselves
Frequently needing others to repeat themselves, speak more clearly or turn towards you can be a sign that your hearing has changed.
03
The television or phone seems quieter than before
Regularly increasing the volume beyond what others find comfortable may indicate that some sounds are becoming harder to hear.
04
Sounds or speech seem muffled
You may be able to hear that someone is speaking but have difficulty making out exactly what they are saying.
05
You’re experiencing tinnitus or other hearing changes
Ringing, buzzing or other sounds in the ears, particularly when accompanied by changes in hearing, may be a reason to arrange a more detailed assessment.
06
You have concerns about your child’s hearing
Your child may not consistently respond to their name, may ask for repetition, turn devices up loudly or appear to have difficulty hearing instructions or conversations.
07
You’ve been referred for a hearing assessment
Your GP or another health professional may recommend diagnostic hearing testing as part of investigating symptoms or monitoring your hearing health.
08
You want a baseline of your hearing
You don’t need to wait until hearing difficulties become significant. A comprehensive assessment can provide a useful baseline and help monitor changes over time.
Hearing Test Fees
Comprehensive hearing assessments are available for both adults and children. The cost of diagnostic hearing tests start from:
- Adults: $150.00
- Children (Aged 3+): $180.00
Medicare Rebates
A Medicare rebate may be available for eligible diagnostic hearing assessments when you have a valid referral from your GP or another eligible medical practitioner.
Please contact our reception team before your appointment if you would like to confirm referral requirements or whether a Medicare rebate may apply.
What to expect?
Your appointment will begin with a discussion about your hearing, any symptoms or concerns you’ve noticed, your medical and hearing history, and the situations in which hearing may be more difficult.
Your audiologist will examine your ears before completing the diagnostic tests appropriate for your needs. This may involve listening and responding to different tones, completing speech-based testing and assessing how your middle ear is functioning.
For children, the assessment is adapted according to their age and developmental stage, with the audiologist selecting testing methods appropriate to the individual child.
Once testing is complete, your audiologist will explain the results in clear terms and answer any questions you may have. Depending on the findings, next steps might include monitoring your hearing, further medical investigation, hearing technology, treatment or referral to your GP or an ENT specialist.

Free Hearing Screen vs Full Hearing Test
A quick hearing screen and a comprehensive hearing test typically serve different purposes. Our free 15-minute hearing screen is a quick initial check designed to identify whether your hearing may require further investigation. It can be useful for adults who have no significant hearing concerns but would like a simple check of their hearing.
However, a comprehensive hearing test is a more detailed diagnostic assessment. It measures your hearing across different frequencies and may include bone conduction, speech testing and assessment of middle-ear function. This provides your audiologist with significantly more information about how you are hearing and whether hearing loss may be present.
A comprehensive hearing test is generally more appropriate if you already have noticeable hearing difficulties, have been referred by a health professional for bone conduction implants or cochlear implants, are experiencing ongoing hearing symptoms, require detailed results or have concerns about your child’s hearing.
If you’re unsure which appointment is right for you, our reception team can help point you in the right direction.
Hearing Test FAQs
What is the difference between a hearing screen and a hearing test?
A free hearing screen is a brief initial check designed to identify whether further hearing assessments are required. Conversely, a comprehensive hearing test is a diagnostic assessment that measures your hearing in greater detail and may include several different types of testing.
How long does a hearing test take?
A comprehensive hearing assessment can take anywhere between 30-60 minutes depending on your age, symptoms and the testing required. This is longer than our free 15-minute hearing screen because it involves more detailed testing and time to discuss your results.
Do I need a referral for a hearing test?
No, you do not need a referral for a hearing test. However, we do accept referrals from other GPs. For both new and existing patients, you can generally book a hearing test directly without a referral.
Please note that a valid medical referral may be required if you are eligible to claim a Medicare rebate for your assessment.
Do you provide hearing tests for children?
Yes, we provide hearing tests for children. Comprehensive hearing assessments are available for children of all ages. Our audiologist will adapt the assessment and testing methods according to the child’s age, developmental stage and individual needs.
What happens if I have hearing loss?
Your audiologist will explain the results, including the type and degree of hearing loss identified, and discuss the next steps relevant to you. This may include monitoring your hearing health, introducing hearing technology, further assessment or referral to another health professional.
Can a hearing test tell what is causing my hearing loss?
A diagnostic hearing assessment can provide important information about the type and pattern of hearing loss and how different parts of the hearing system are functioning. However, it is not always an absolute indicator of the cause of hearing loss. In some cases, further medical assessment may be required to investigate the underlying cause.
What should I bring to my hearing test?
Please bring any relevant medical referrals and previous hearing test results if you have them. If you currently use hearing aids or other hearing devices, bringing these with you is also very helpful.
For children, any relevant medical, developmental or educational information relating to their hearing or communication may also be helpful for our audiologist to obtain a holistic overview of your childs hearing health.
Can earwax affect my hearing test?
Yes. Significant earwax build-up can affect hearing and may interfere with some forms of testing. Your audiologist will examine your ears and advise you whether ear cleaning and wax removal or further assessment is required.
