Mole Screening Services
Moles can be difficult to monitor, especially when you have many of them or they are located on areas of your body that are difficult to see. Digital mole mapping creates a detailed photographic record of your skin, allowing moles and other lesions to be compared over time for visible changes.
At Narangba Station Health Centre, mole mapping services are provided alongside a clinical skin assessment to establish Standardised images establish a baseline record with selected spots examined and photographed more closely using a dermatoscope.
Mole mapping can be particularly useful for people with numerous or atypical moles and those at increased risk of melanoma. If you have noticed a new or changing spot, do not wait for a routine monitoring appointment. Book a skin assessment as soon as possible.

What Mole Mapping Includes
While a standard skin check assesses your skin as it appears during a particular appointment, mole mapping adds standardised digital photography to track changes over time and can be helpful for people with many or unusual moles. It complements, not replaces, a clinical skin check, with a trained medical practitioner assessing any changes or concerns.
Here’s what to expect from your initial appointment:
Consultation
Your appointment begins with a discussion about your skin history, sun exposure and any moles that concern you. Your doctor will then assess your skin and examine areas requiring closer attention.
Mole Mapping
A series of standardised digital photographs is taken to document the location and appearance of your moles and lesions. These images create a baseline for comparison at future appointments.
Dermoscopy
Selected moles or lesions may be examined using a dermatoscope, which provides a magnified view beneath the skin’s surface. Digital images may also be recorded for closer monitoring.
Follow-Up
If a lesion appears suspicious, your doctor may recommend further monitoring, biopsy, removal or referral. At follow-up appointments, new photographs can be compared to identify new or changing spots.
Mole changes you should have checked promptly:
01
New or changing moles
Any new spot or a mole that changes over time should be assessed by a doctor.
02
Changes in size, shape or colour
This includes uneven borders, multiple colours, increasing diameter or a changing surface.
03
A mole that looks different
A mole that looks noticeably different from the other spots on your skin is sometimes described as an “ugly duckling.”
04
Itching, bleeding or crusting
A lesion that repeatedly itches, bleeds, crusts, weeps or becomes tender should be examined.
05
A sore that does not heal
Book an assessment for a sore that does not heal or repeatedly appears to heal before returning.
06
A fast growing lesion
Some skin cancers do not follow the usual ABCDE pattern. A rapidly growing lump or lesion warrants prompt medical attention.
Fees & Medicare Rebates
An initial 15 minute skin consultation costs $150.00 and is not eligible for a Medicare rebate. Medicare does not generally cover routine, preventive full-body skin checks or annual skin cancer screening.
As advised by your doctor, additional fees may apply for treatment, including mole mapping, biopsies, procedures or prescriptions. These will be explained to you during your first appointment before proceeding.

Mole Mapping FAQs
Do I need a referral?
No, you do not need a referral. While we accept referrals from other doctors, both new and existing patients can book mole mapping directly without a referral from your regular doctor.
What is mole mapping?
Mole mapping uses standardised digital photographs to create a visual record of your skin. These images can be compared at future appointments to help identify new moles or changes in existing lesions.
Is mole mapping the same as skin cancer checks?
No. A skin check is a clinical examination performed by a medical practitioner. Mole mapping adds photography and ongoing image comparison. Mole mapping supports a clinical examination but does not replace it.
Does mole mapping cover every mole?
Total-body photographs record broad areas of the skin and the location of visible lesions. Selected moles may also be photographed individually or with a dermatoscope when closer monitoring is appropriate. Whether every mole is separately imaged depends on the service and your clinical needs.
How often should mole mapping be repeated?
There is no single interval suitable for everyone. Your doctor will recommend a follow-up schedule based on your risk factors, the number and appearance of your moles, and any previous skin-cancer history.
Does mole mapping hurt?
No. Photography and dermoscopy are non-invasive and should not be painful. A separate procedure may be recommended if a lesion requires a biopsy or removal.
