Earwax Removal & Ear Cleaning Services in Narangba

Earwax is a normal and important part of keeping your ears healthy, but when too much builds up it can block the ear canal and cause symptoms such as muffled hearing, pressure, discomfort or tinnitus. In addition, some patients may also experience infections when attempting to self-clean with Q-tips or their fingers.

At Narangba Station Health Centre, in partnership with Audiwell Hearing, we provide professional earwax removal using microsuction which is a precise technique that removes excess or impacted wax without flushing water into the ear canal.

Book an appointment today by calling (07) 3521 5523 or clicking the link below to book online. Your audiologist will examine your ears before treatment, carefully remove any wax and check the ear canal again once the procedure is complete.

How does microsuction earwax removal work?

Microsuction is a dry ear-cleaning technique that uses a small suction device to carefully remove wax and debris from the ear canal. Your audiologist can view the ear canal throughout the procedure, allowing the wax to be removed in a controlled and targeted way. The treatment is generally straightforward and can often be completed during a single appointment.

Ear Examination

Your audiologist first examines the ear canal and eardrum to assess the amount and location of the wax and determine whether microsuction is appropriate.

Wax Visualised

Specialised equipment allows your audiologist to see inside the ear canal throughout treatment and identify the areas requiring removal.

Earwax Gently Removed

A fine suction device is carefully positioned within the ear canal to remove excess or impacted wax without flushing water into the ear.

Recheck Ears

Once the wax has been removed, your audiologist will re-examine the ear canal and provide any appropriate advice about ongoing ear care or further assessment.

Signs you may need ear cleaning or wax removal

Earwax usually leaves the ear naturally and does not need to be routinely removed. However, wax can sometimes accumulate or become impacted, causing noticeable symptoms. Patients who experience any of the following should book an appointment to assess whether your ears are blocked and require wax removal:

01

Your ear feels blocked.

A build-up of wax can create a persistent feeling of pressure, fullness or blockage within the ear.

02

Your hearing is muffled

Impacted earwax can partially block sound from travelling through the ear canal and may cause changes in hearing.

03

You experience tinnitus.

A build-up of earwax can sometimes be associated tinnitus symptoms with ringing, buzzing or other noises in the affected ear.

04

You wear hearing aids.

Hearing aids can interfere with the ear’s natural wax-clearing process, making some people more prone to recurrent build-up.

05

You often use earbuds.

Items worn within the ear canal can sometimes prevent wax from naturally moving out of the ear.

06

You have recurring build-up.

Some people naturally produce more wax or have narrower ear canals, making repeated blockage more likely.

Microsuction vs Ear Syringing

There are several ways earwax can be removed professionally. Two commonly used approaches are microsuction and irrigation, sometimes referred to as ear syringing.

Microsuction uses a small suction device to remove wax while the clinician directly views the ear canal. It is a dry technique, meaning water does not need to be introduced into the ear.

Ear irrigation uses water to flush wax from the ear canal and may be appropriate for some patients depending on their ear health and medical history.

Microsuction provides your audiologist with continuous visual control throughout the procedure and can be useful when a dry method of wax removal is preferred.

The best method depends on the amount and consistency of the wax, your symptoms and your ear health. Your clinician will assess your ears before recommending or performing removal.

Earwax Removal FAQs

No, you do not need a referral for professional earwax cleaning. Both new and existing patients of the practice can make an appointment privately.

Microsuction is a professional ear-cleaning technique that uses a small suction device to remove excess or impacted wax while the clinician directly views the ear canal.

No. Microsuction is a dry technique and does not involve flushing the ear canal with water.

Microsuction is generally well tolerated by all patients, although experiences can vary. You may notice suction sounds or some brief sensations within the ear while wax is being removed and it is unlikely to feel any pain. Please let your audiologist know at any point during your treatment if you feel uncomfortable.

Not everyone needs to use wax-softening drops before professional ear cleaning. If your wax is particularly hard or impacted, softening it before your appointment may sometimes make removal easier. Please contact our team if you are unsure what preparation is appropriate for you.

Typically, an earwax removal appointment takes between 15-30 minutes. However, appointment times may vary depending on how much wax is present, whether one or both ears require treatment and how easily the wax can be removed. Your ears will also be examined before and after treatment.

Microsuction can be used to remove many cases of excess or impacted wax. If the wax is particularly hard, deeply positioned or cannot be safely removed during your appointment, your clinician will advise you about the appropriate next steps.

A significant build-up of earwax can block the ear canal and cause temporary reduction in hearing. If your hearing remains reduced after the wax has been cleared, a comprehensive hearing assessment may be recommended.

Cotton buds and other objects placed inside the ear can push wax deeper into the canal and may cause hearing injuries. Patients are advised to only clean the outer part of the ear rather than inserting objects into the ear canal. If you have irritation or blocked ears, these should always be professionally cleaned.

Most people do not need routine earwax removal because earwax naturally moves it's way out of the ear. If, however, you experience recurrent build-up, wear hearing aids or have previously required regular removal, your audiologist can advise you on an appropriate approach for your ears. For most patients this can be every 6-12 months.

Whilst most commonly wax buildup, a blocked or muffled ear can have causes other than earwax. If little or no wax is found, or your symptoms continue after removal, you may be advised to see your GP or undergo further tests to assess your hearing condition.
